'Walking right past would be a big mistake'. The looks and setting - opposite Woolworths in an unprepossessing suburb near Crystal Palace Park - may not catch the eye, but this restaurant is worth a detour. Numidie has its own clear identity, avoids clichés, and has a relatively simple, if static, menu, supplemented by a few daily specials. Expect confident, enjoyable cooking. Although the theme is North African, there are some odd posh choices reflecting French North Africa; say, duck breast with quince purée, chicory and asparagus, or veal rib in truffle jus. The rest is a more traditional slate of couscous, tagines, merquez, and brochettes, with some good vegetarian choices like assiette mediterranéenne that takes in things like stuffed aubergine, falafel, steamed couscous, hummus and harissa sauce. House wine is £9.50. Numidie SE19 1RX |
